The hands are often the first part of the body to show signs of ageing. The gradual reduction of collagen and elastin in the skin results in a loss of elasticity and gives rise to wrinkles. Causes of fat and muscle loss can include the natural decline in muscle mass and fat distribution with age, the loss of fat through significant weight reduction and a genetic predisposition. A variety of medical conditions can also cause weakness in the hands. Muscle loss can also have lifestyle consequences, if a weakened grip leads to difficulties performing everyday tasks.
