Concerned about Wrinkled Lips?

Our modern treatments for wrinkled lips are designed to not only reduce their appearance but also rejuvenate your lip area, ensuring a smoother and more youthful look.

Lip Wrinkles: Causes, Treatments, and Prevention

Lip wrinkles, also known as lip lines or smoker’s lines, are vertical lines that start on the lips and extend toward the nose, becoming deeper and more noticeable with age. These wrinkles can be particularly frustrating as they are accentuated by lipstick. The primary causes include a decrease in collagen and elastin production, constant exposure to the elements and UV light, and smoking. The repetitive pursing of the lips also contributes to their formation.

Treatments Available

  • Dermal Fillers: are used to fill in fine lines and create fuller-looking lips. Hyaluronic acid, specifically designed for lip lines, is injected into the lips and surrounding area for subtle but effective changes.
  • Chemical Peels: remove the top layer of skin, promoting the growth of new, younger-looking skin. Your practitioner will advise on the best type of peel for your needs.
  • Laser Resurfacing: removes the top layer of skin and tightens it, making it particularly effective for the area around the mouth, nose, and eyes. Results can last several years.
  • Microneedling: uses tiny needles to transmit heat energy into the skin, stimulating new collagen production. This procedure reduces fine lines around the lips and tightens the skin.
  • Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Known as the vampire facial, PRP uses plasma from your own blood to stimulate collagen production. Platelets are injected into your face through a microneedling device.
  • Toxin injections: can relax the muscles causing lip lines, softening their appearance. This treatment requires an experienced practitioner for the best results.

What causes barcode Lip Lines?

You start to notice barcode lip lines as the skin ages, collagen degrades, and elastin levels drop. The skin above the upper lip, which is always being stretched when we open our mouths or smile, becomes less able to spring back into shape and starts to collapse into tiny wrinkles.

Barcode lines are more obvious in smokers because smoking directly ages the skin. Pursing the lips around a cigarette puts extra stress on the skin. Activities like drinking through a straw, whistling, or taking duck-face selfies also contribute.

Barcode lines become more visible as lip volume decreases. Enhancing the upper lip usually softens the look of these tiny vertical lines.

If you’re concerned about wrinkled lips, our experienced practitioners at Skin Medical can help you choose the right treatment for a youthful and smooth appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

All of the questions you need to ask about Wrinkled Lips?

Why are my lips wrinkled?

Lip wrinkles, also known as lip lines or smoker’s lines, develop primarily due to a decrease in collagen and elastin production as you age. Additionally, constant exposure to the elements, UV light, and smoking contribute to their formation. The repetitive pursing of the lips also plays a significant role.

Why do my lips keep shrivelling?

Shriveling lips can occur due to a loss of moisture and reduced elasticity in the skin as you age. Factors like environmental exposure, dehydration, and lifestyle habits such as smoking can exacerbate this.

Why are my lips pruney?

Pruney lips, characterised by a wrinkled appearance similar to prune skin, can result from a lack of hydration and diminished skin elasticity. UV exposure, smoking, and ageing are contributing factors.

How to get rid of lines in lips naturally?

Natural methods to reduce lines in lips include staying hydrated, using SPF lip balms, avoiding smoking, and consuming a diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats. Additionally, lip care routines with gentle exfoliation and moisturizing can help.

What's the best treatment for lip wrinkles?

Effective treatments for lip wrinkles include dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and toxin injections. These treatments restore lip volume, smooth out wrinkles, and rejuvenate the skin.

How can I rejuvenate my aging lips?

Rejuvenating ageing lips involves using treatments like dermal fillers to restore lost volume, chemical peels to promote new skin growth, and laser resurfacing to tighten and smooth the skin. PRP and microneedling can stimulate collagen production for a more youthful appearance.

How do you get rid of wrinkles on your lips without Botox?

Wrinkles on the lips can be reduced without Botox through treatments like dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser resurfacing, microneedling, and PRP. These options provide natural-looking results and rejuvenate the lips effectively.

Menopause can cause the skin to become drier, thinner, and more sensitive. The skins cell turnover slows down, this is due to the body producing less estrogen. The production of fibroblasts also slow down. Fibroblasts produce collagen and elastin, you may notice you skin loses its plumpness and firmness.
