It was the things nobody mentions upfront: how the depth of the needles changes what actually happens inside your skin. Why the same treatment can be completely safe for one skin tone and risky for another. And why “deeper” does not automatically mean “better” when it comes to results.
If you’ve been researching RF microneedling, you’ve likely come across several comparison guides by now. Most cover the basics and leave it there. But as a skin medical professional who works with these devices daily, I know the conversation needs to go deeper than a features chart.
What truly sets Secret RF and Morpheus8 apart comes down to things I discuss with my patients before every treatment: how needle depth determines what’s happening at each layer of your skin, why device design matters more than most people realize for skin tone safety, and why reaching deeper tissue isn’t always the advantage it sounds like.
Through years of clinical experience with both devices, staying across the latest research, and closely monitoring how my patients respond to each treatment, I’ve developed a clear perspective on what matters most when choosing between them.
Radiofrequency microneedling combines two things your skin responds to: controlled micro-injuries from tiny needles. Thermal energy from radiofrequency waves delivered through those needles into the deeper layers of your skin.
Your body reads both signals the same way: something needs rebuilding. So it floods the area with new collagen and elastin, the proteins that give skin its firmness, bounce, and smooth texture. Over the weeks and months that follow, that new collagen matures and remodels, gradually tightening and resurfacing the skin from the inside out.
This is why RF microneedling works, Radio-frequency skin tightening is an aesthetic technique that uses radio frequency (RF) energy to heat skin with the purpose of stimulating cutaneous collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid production. In order to reduce the appearance of fine lines and loose skin and overall texture. And it is why the results last. The improvements are built from your body’s own repair process.
Secret RF and Morpheus8 both use this same science. But the way each device delivers that RF energy turns out to matter more than you might expect. Secret RF has gold plated needles. We can tailor the depth of the needles by 0.1mm in contrast to the Morpheus8 which has preset depths of 1,2,3,4mm only. This means that depending on your age and skin thickness, we can deliver the energy at the exactly the right depth to target your deep dermis where you collagen stimulating cells are.

Here is something that most comparison articles gloss over, but it is actually the most important factor in how your treatment will go.
Your skin is layered. The outer epidermis, the collagen-rich dermis beneath it, and below that, the subcutaneous layer where your fat pads live. Different skin concerns live at different depths. Fine lines and pore size are superficial. Collagen loss and mild laxity sit in the mid-dermis. Deep scars reach further down. And fat remodeling happens in the subcutaneous layer.
This is where Secret RF and Morpheus8 take fundamentally different approaches.
The difference between the two is less about what the results look like and more about the efficiency of getting there.
| Secret RF | Morpheus8 | |
|---|---|---|
Needle design | Semi-insulated, gold-plated stainless steel. Energy at tip only | Coated microneedles. Bipolar RF delivery |
Tip options | 25-pin (precision) + 64-pin (largest surface area in RF microneedling) | Standard face tip + Body tip |
Typical downtime | 1-2 days mild redness | 3-5 days redness, swelling, possible grid marks |
Best for | Comprehensive skin rejuvenation: lines, scars, texture, pores, tightening, all skin tones | Deep tissue remodeling, subdermal fat reduction, body contouring |
The real distinction is that your practitioner can treat at multiple depths within a single session. A shallower pass for fine lines and pores, a mid-depth pass forcollagen stimulation, and a deeper pass for skin tightening, all in one appointment. Think of it like a painter working in layers rather than trying to do everything in one heavy coat. Each pass delivers RF energy precisely where it is needed at that specific depth, without over-treating any single layer.
This is also why Secret RF comes with two tip sizes: a 64-pin tip that covers the largest treatment area of any RF microneedling device available, and a 25-pin tip for precise work on smaller areas like around the eyes.
Morpheus8, uses 24 coated microneedles that can reach up to 4mm on the face and up to 7-8mm with the body handpiece, penetrating into the subdermal and subcutaneous layers. This depth is what allows it to target fat remodeling, particularly under the chin.
The logic seemed straightforward: more depth equals more collagen stimulation equals better results.
But the clinical picture is more nuanced. The dermis, where collagen remodeling happens, typically extends to about 2-4mm depending on the body area. Most of the skin concerns people seek RF microneedling for, including fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pore size, and mild to moderate laxity, live within this dermal layer.

Going deeper than the dermis means entering the fat layer. That is useful if targeted fat reduction is the goal (like under the chin). But for skin quality concerns, extra depth does not add extra benefit. In fact, it introduces a consideration that is worth being aware of.
Several practitioners noted that when RF energy reaches the fat pads at deeper settings, it can cause unintended volume reduction. Some patients in review communities described a hollowed or aged appearance in treated areas after Morpheus8 treatment at deeper settings. It does not happen to everyone, and it is often related to practitioner technique and settings. But it is the kind of thing most people do not know to ask about beforehand.
Secret RF’s 3.5mm maximum depth keeps the RF energy within the dermal layer where collagen lives, which is precisely where it needs to be for the skin concerns most people are treating. The multi-depth approach means it covers the full range of that dermal layer, superficial to deep, without crossing into territory where unintended effects become a factor.
I had my first Secret RF treatment with Malini today and couldn’t be happier!
I was a little nervous about the pain, but the staff made me feel so welcome and at ease from the moment I walked in.
Malini was absolutely amazing from start to finish. She took the time to explain everything, was so kind, reassuring and made sure I was comfortable throughout the treatment.
The treatment itself was so much more comfortable than I expected, and I knew I was in great hands!
I’m so happy that I went ahead and booked
a course of three treatments. Very excited for my next treatment and the results.
My experience with Skin Medical to date has been incredible. Dr Sabika is truly exceptional, her expertise, care, and attention to detail has made all the difference from my very first consultation. Along with Malini they have both helped me establish a tailored skincare routine that’s been working wonders.
Thank you Skin Medical team!
One of the most reassuring things about RF microneedling in general, and Secret RF specifically, is that the results are built on your body’s own biology. The Secret RF treatment stimulates your natural collagen production. That collagen is real, structural protein that integrates into your skin, not a temporary filler that dissolves or a toxin that wears off after a few months.
Most patients see initial improvement within 2-4 weeks as the first wave of new collagen forms. The real transformation happens over the following 3-6 months as that collagen matures, tightens, and continues remodeling. After a full course of 3-4 treatments, results typically hold for 12-18 months or longer.
What I found interesting: many patients reported that with an annual maintenance session, their skin quality did not just maintain, it continued improving year over year. The cumulative effect of building on your existing collagen base is something you do not get from treatments that simply wear off and reset.
One of the things that stood out in the research was how mild and predictable Secret RF‘s side effect profile is. The most commonly reported effects are:
Serious complications are rare when the Secret RF treatment is performed by a trained practitioner, and the controlled, layered RF energy delivery is a key reason why. Because Secret RF delivers energy precisely at the target depth through its semi-insulated needle design, there is minimal thermal impact on surrounding tissue. This matters particularly for reducing the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones and avoiding unintended effects on deeper tissue layers.
Pricing varies by clinic location, practitioner experience, and the number of areas treated, but here is a general range to help you plan:
When comparing value, it is worth thinking beyond the per-session price. Consider how much downtime you can realistically afford, since fewer days of recovery means less disruption to your work and life. And always ask about package pricing, as most clinics offer meaningful discounts.

Secret RF comes with two tip options: a 64-pin tip that covers the largest treatment area of any RF microneedling device on the market, and a 25-pin tip for precise work on smaller or more delicate areas like around the eyes.
Most people experience 24–48 hours of mild redness, similar to a light sunburn. Slight swelling, tenderness, and light peeling around days 3–5 are also common. Many patients return to their normal routine the next day and are able to apply makeup within 24 hours.
Most patients describe a prickling sensation with warmth. Topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, and the experience is generally described as manageable. Many patients report it being more comfortable than they expected.
Secret RF is validated safe across Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI, including darker skin tones and tanned skin. Its semi-insulated needle design delivers RF energy at the tip of the needle rather than along the full shaft, which helps reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in melanin-rich upper skin layers.
