A Brazilian Butt Lift has traditionally meant surgery and fat transfer, but it isn’t the only route to a fuller, more lifted silhouette anymore. Non-surgical BBL uses injectable volumisers to add projection and lift with no incisions, no anaesthetic, and none of the recovery time that comes with a surgical procedure. It’s become one of the most in-demand body treatments for exactly that reason.
Here’s how it works, who it suits, and what makes safety such an important part of the conversation.
A non-surgical BBL, sometimes called a non-surgical bum lift or filler BBL, uses injectable volumising or collagen-stimulating products to improve the shape of the buttocks.
At Skin Medical, treatments such as Lanluma can be used to enhance areas including the buttocks and hip dips. Lanluma contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which stimulates the body’s own collagen production over time.
Unlike traditional hyaluronic acid filler, where much of the visible volume comes from the injected gel itself, PLLA treatments rely substantially on the tissue response they trigger. This means changes develop progressively rather than the final result being visible immediately after treatment.
The aim might be to:
A consultation is important because the amount of change that can be achieved without surgery varies considerably from person to person.

Lanluma is a collagen-stimulating injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid.
Once injected into the appropriate tissue plane, the PLLA stimulates a biological response that encourages new collagen formation. Over the following weeks and months, this increase in collagen can gradually contribute to greater fullness, improved contour and better skin quality within the treated area.
This is why a Lanluma BBL is not an instant-volume treatment. Some initial fullness immediately after treatment may relate to the fluid used during preparation and treatment, but the longer-term result develops progressively as collagen forms.
“One of the most important things I explain to patients is that a Lanluma BBL isn’t designed to create an overnight transformation. We’re stimulating your own collagen, so the shape develops gradually. For the right patient, that can produce a much softer and more natural-looking change.”
– Dr Sabika

A non-surgical BBL is usually planned as a course rather than a one-off treatment.
The number of sessions and amount of product required depend on several factors, including:
Someone wanting to soften relatively small hip dips may need a different plan from somebody looking for a more noticeable overall increase in buttock volume.
Your treatment plan should therefore be established following an individual assessment rather than according to a standard number of vials or sessions.

Results develop gradually because collagen formation takes time.
Changes may start to become noticeable over the weeks following treatment, with the shape continuing to develop over subsequent months as collagen is produced and remodelled.
This makes a non-surgical BBL particularly suited to people who prefer a progressive change rather than suddenly appearing to have had a significant augmentation.
It also means patience is important. The result immediately after an appointment should not be taken as the final outcome.

Results from PLLA collagen-stimulating treatments are long-lasting but not permanent.
How long they remain visible varies according to the product used, treatment plan, individual biological response and natural changes to the body over time.
Lanluma states that results can last for more than two years in appropriate patients. However, individual results vary, and maintenance treatment may eventually be considered if you want to preserve the effect.
Your practitioner can advise when, or whether, a maintenance session is appropriate after assessing how your result develops.
Despite sharing the term “BBL”, the two treatments work in completely different ways.
| Non-surgical BBL | Surgical BBL | |
| How it works | Injectable products stimulate collagen and/or create volume | Fat is removed from another part of the body and transferred to the buttocks |
| Surgery required? | No | Yes |
| Anaesthesia | Does not require general anaesthesia | Typically performed under anaesthesia |
| Results | Gradual and generally more subtle | Greater changes in volume and body contour may be possible |
| Downtime | Usually less, although temporary swelling, tenderness or bruising may occur | More substantial recovery and post-operative restrictions |
| Longevity | Long-lasting but not permanent | Successfully transferred fat can provide a longer-lasting result, although body shape continues to change naturally |
| Best suited to | People seeking moderate contour or volume enhancement without surgery | People wanting a larger change who are suitable for surgery and fat transfer |
| Risks | Injection-related complications remain possible and can be serious | Surgical, anaesthetic and fat-transfer-specific complications are possible |
A non-surgical BBL should therefore not be presented as a direct substitute for surgery. The scale of change is different, as are the procedure, recovery and risk profile.
It is more accurate to say that the risks are different, rather than describing a non-surgical BBL as risk-free.
Avoiding an operation means avoiding certain risks associated with surgery, general anaesthesia, liposuction and fat transfer. However, injecting large volumes of product into the buttocks carries its own potential complications.
The gluteal region contains important blood vessels and other anatomical structures. Safe treatment therefore depends on detailed anatomical knowledge, appropriate product selection, careful injection technique and knowing how to recognise and manage complications.
Possible adverse effects from injectable collagen stimulators can include swelling, bruising, pain, infection and the development of lumps or nodules. More serious complications are possible.
For this reason, the qualifications and experience of the person performing a non-surgical BBL matter enormously.
“The word ‘non-surgical’ can sometimes make a treatment sound more casual than it is. Buttock augmentation is not an area where I would ever recommend choosing a practitioner on price alone. Understanding gluteal anatomy, using the right technique and knowing how to manage complications are essential.”
– Dr Sabika

Buttock augmentation has attracted particular safety attention in aesthetic medicine, including procedures performed using injectable products.
Before undergoing treatment, you should feel comfortable asking:
A reputable practitioner should be willing to discuss both the potential benefits and limitations of treatment with you, rather than simply promising a particular body shape.
Lanluma and Sculptra are both based on poly-L-lactic acid and stimulate collagen formation, but they are different products and should not simply be treated as interchangeable.
Product formulation, preparation, treatment protocols and suitability for a particular patient can differ.
Lanluma is specifically used for body contouring and can be used to enhance the buttocks. The most appropriate collagen stimulator will depend on the area being treated, your anatomy and the clinician’s treatment plan.

A non-surgical BBL may be suitable if you would like a moderate enhancement to the shape or fullness of your buttocks but do not want surgical fat transfer.
You may be a suitable candidate if you:
It may be less suitable if you want a very dramatic increase in buttock size or if your medical history or anatomy makes injectable treatment inappropriate.

Some swelling, tenderness or bruising can occur after treatment. Your practitioner will explain what is expected and provide specific aftercare instructions according to the product and technique used.
Although recovery is usually considerably less involved than after surgical fat transfer, describing the procedure as having “no downtime” can be misleading. You should allow for temporary post-treatment effects and follow your clinician’s advice about exercise, pressure on the treated area and other activities.
Contact your clinic promptly if you experience symptoms that are severe, rapidly worsening or different from those described in your aftercare advice.
This completely depends on the result you are hoping to achieve.
For someone who wants a relatively subtle increase in volume, improved curves or softer hip dips without surgery, a collagen-stimulating treatment can be an effective option. For someone looking for a major transformation in size or body proportions, a non-surgical treatment may not deliver the degree of change they have in mind.
The most important part of planning treatment is therefore establishing what can realistically be achieved for your individual anatomy before proceeding.
