Some pockets of fat refuse to shift, however well you eat and however often you train. CoolSculpting targets those areas with controlled cooling, reducing fat cells without needles, surgery or downtime. It’s one of the most widely used non-surgical fat reduction treatments in the world, and one of the most misunderstood.
Here’s CoolSculpting explained: how fat freezing works, which areas it suits, and what results you can realistically expect.
Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the skin, muscle and nerves around them. Cryolipolysis takes advantage of that difference.
During treatment, the cold causes the lipids inside fat cells to crystallise. This triggers a natural process called apoptosis, a controlled form of cell death. Over the next few weeks, the immune system gradually removes the damaged cells and processes them through the lymphatic system, in the same way it clears other cell debris.
Studies of cryolipolysis commonly report a reduction of around 20 to 25 percent in the fat layer of a treated area after one session. Once fat cells have been cleared, they do not come back. The fat cells that remain can still grow with weight gain, however, so a stable weight helps maintain your results.
CoolSculpting works best on soft, pinchable fat that can be drawn into the applicator. Commonly treated areas include:
During your consultation, the practitioner will assess the area and confirm whether it suits CoolSculpting. For smaller or harder-to-reach areas, an injectable fat reduction treatment such as Aqualyx may sometimes be a better fit.

A CoolSculpting session is straightforward and needs no anaesthetic.
There are no incisions and no downtime. Most patients go straight back to work or normal activities the same day.

Because the body clears fat cells gradually, CoolSculpting results are not instant.
| Time after treatment | What usually happens |
|---|---|
| First few days | Redness, swelling, tenderness or numbness, settling over days to weeks |
| Around 3 weeks | Some people notice early changes |
| 8 to 12 weeks | Most visible fat reduction as cells are cleared |
| Around 3 to 4 months | Results typically settle; a further session may be discussed |
Many patients have one or two sessions per area, depending on how much fat there is and the result they want. Results vary between individuals, which is why CoolSculpting before and after photos should always be viewed as examples, not guarantees.
CoolSculpting is designed for stubborn pockets of fat, not for weight loss. It tends to suit people who:
It is not suitable for significant weight loss, loose skin or fat that sits deep around the internal organs. It is also not appropriate for people with certain cold-related conditions, such as cryoglobulinaemia or cold agglutinin disease, or during pregnancy. Your consultation will cover your medical history to make sure treatment is safe for you.

CoolSculpting reshapes specific areas; it does not reduce overall body weight. Weight loss medications work on appetite and total body fat instead, so the two do different jobs and can sometimes complement each other. If you are weighing up these options, our blog on CoolSculpting vs Mounjaro compares them in detail.
CoolSculpting is non-invasive and well established, but side effects are possible. Common, temporary effects include:
A rare side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH) can cause the treated fat to become larger and firmer rather than smaller. It is uncommon, but it is important to know about, and it is one reason treatment should always be carried out by trained practitioners in a medical setting.
Aftercare is simple, and most people carry on as normal. Gentle massage, staying hydrated and keeping active can support comfort and recovery. You can read our full CoolSculpting aftercare guide for step-by-step advice.
