What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is an advanced in-clinic treatment that uses a precision device to create controlled microchannels in the surface of the skin or scalp. This process triggers the skin’s natural repair response, stimulating collagen and elastin production and improving overall skin quality, texture and resilience.

At Skin Medical, microneedling is available as a standalone treatment or combined with a range of specialist topical formulations that are infused directly into the skin during the procedure. This allows us to tailor each session precisely to your concerns, whether you are targeting skin quality, pigmentation, hydration, hair loss or scalp health.

The result is a highly personalised, clinically driven treatment with minimal downtime and progressive, long-lasting results.

How Microneedling Works

The microneedling device creates tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin at a precise depth. These microchannels serve two purposes. First, they stimulate the skin’s natural wound-healing response, activating fibroblasts and triggering the production of new collagen and elastin. Second, when a topical formulation is applied during the procedure, they act as direct pathways allowing those active ingredients to penetrate far more deeply than they would through normal topical application alone.

The treatment is precise, controlled and adapted to the area being treated. Needle depth is adjusted depending on your skin concern and the treatment area, ensuring optimal results with minimal disruption to the skin surface.

Who is Microneedling suitable for?

Microneedling is suitable for a wide range of skin types, tones and concerns. It is particularly well suited to patients who want progressive, natural-looking improvement in skin quality with minimal downtime, and those looking to address specific concerns such as pigmentation, dullness, texture or hair thinning.

The treatment may not be suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active skin infection or area of active inflammation in the treatment zone, or have certain underlying medical conditions. A thorough consultation is required before treatment to confirm suitability and identify the most appropriate formulation for your concerns.

What happens during a microneedling session?

Each session follows a structured protocol. The skin or scalp is cleansed and prepared, and a topical numbing cream can be applied if preferred. Microneedling is then performed across the treatment area at a controlled depth, creating the microchannels needed to stimulate collagen production and enhance ingredient absorption. Where a topical formulation is included, it is applied during the needling process to ensure optimal penetration.

You may experience a mild scratching or prickling sensation during treatment. Most patients find it very well tolerated. Sessions typically take around 30 minutes and downtime is minimal.

Back to work timeline

Microneedling is a low-downtime treatment. You may notice mild redness, slight swelling or minor sensitivity in the treated area immediately after the session. These effects typically settle within 24 to 48 hours. Most patients return to work the same day, though some prefer to wait until the following day if redness is more pronounced.

Results and expectations

Results from microneedling develop progressively as the skin responds to stimulation and the effects of any active formulations take hold. Most patients begin to notice improvements in skin texture, radiance and hydration within a few days to two weeks of their first session. More significant improvements in skin quality, tone and hair density develop over the course of a full treatment programme.

A course of treatments is recommended for optimal results, with sessions typically spaced two to four weeks apart. Maintenance sessions help to sustain and build on results over the long term. Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate plan at your consultation.

Your consultation at Skin Medical

A consultation is required before beginning any microneedling treatment at Skin Medical. During your appointment, Dr Sabika Karim or a member of our specialist team will assess your skin or scalp condition, discuss your concerns and goals, review your medical history, and recommend the most appropriate microneedling option and treatment plan for you.

Our consultations are thorough, relaxed and completely pressure-free. There is no obligation to proceed, and many patients find the consultation itself invaluable in understanding their skin or hair concerns more clearly.

Microneedling Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the microneedling options at Skin Medical?

All of our microneedling treatments use the same precision needling protocol to stimulate collagen production and improve skin or scalp health. The key difference between options is the active formulation applied during the procedure. Standard microneedling uses needling alone. Other options incorporate specialist formulations including Dutexome for scalp and hair loss, Hairsomes for hair follicle support, Biosomes for skin regeneration, Brightening Biosomes for pigmentation and dullness, and C Prof for brightening and antioxidant support. Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate option at your consultation.

Is microneedling painful?

Most patients describe the treatment as mildly uncomfortable rather than painful. The sensation is often likened to light scratching or prickling across the skin. A topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if preferred, which significantly improves comfort for most patients.

How many sessions will I need?

A course of treatments is recommended for optimal results, typically spaced two to four weeks apart. The exact number depends on your individual concerns and the treatment option chosen. Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate plan at your consultation and review your progress as the course progresses.

Is there any downtime after microneedling?

Downtime is minimal. You may experience mild redness, slight swelling or sensitivity for 24 to 48 hours following treatment. Most patients return to work the same day, though some prefer to wait until the following morning if redness is more noticeable.

When will I see results?

Improvements develop progressively. Many patients notice improvements in radiance, hydration and skin texture within a few days. More significant changes in skin quality, tone and hair density develop over the course of a full treatment programme and in the weeks following each session as collagen production increases.

Can microneedling be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Microneedling works well alongside other treatments and is often incorporated into a wider skin health or hair restoration programme. Common combinations include PRP, KeraJuv, LED light therapy and chemical peels. Your practitioner will advise on the most appropriate combination at your consultation.

Is microneedling suitable for all skin types?

Yes. Microneedling is suitable for most skin types and tones. Unlike heat or light-based treatments, it does not carry the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones, making it a versatile option for a wide range of patients. Suitability will be confirmed at your consultation.

Are there any side effects?

Side effects are generally mild and temporary. The most commonly reported include redness, slight swelling and minor sensitivity in the treated area. Occasional pinpoint marks may be visible at the needling sites but typically resolve within 24 hours. Rare side effects include bruising or, if aftercare is not followed, a small risk of infection.

How long do the results last?

Results can be long-lasting when a full course is completed and supported with appropriate maintenance sessions and homecare. The longevity of results varies depending on the treatment option chosen, your individual skin or scalp condition, and lifestyle factors. Your practitioner will advise on a maintenance schedule at your follow-up.
