Platelet-rich Fibrin at Skin Medical

Worried about hair loss? Speak to the team at Skin Medical about PRF.

Hair loss can be a distressing experience, affecting self-confidence and self-esteem for both men and women at any stage of life. Whether it’s due to natural ageing, hormonal shifts, or genetics, hair loss often appears as thinning, bald spots, or gradual shedding.

Fortunately, advances in non-surgical hair restoration treatments such as Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy are providing effective solutions to combat hair loss naturally and without surgery.

At Skin Medical, we’re committed to using cutting-edge treatments like PRF to help patients regain their confidence through natural, minimally invasive solutions. PRF treatments for hair loss are highly regarded for their ability to improve scalp health and stimulate hair growth gradually, providing a more organic and long-lasting solution.

How does PRF work? How is it different from PRP?

A small amount of your blood is drawn, which is then spun in a centrifuge to extract the platelet-rich fibrin. This concentrated PRF is rich in growth factors, platelets, and bioactive proteins that are essential for tissue regeneration.

Unlike PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma), PRF is processed without anticoagulants, meaning it contains a higher concentration of growth factors and works as a more potent, next-generation treatment. Once prepared, the PRF is injected into targeted areas of the scalp where hair loss or thinning is most prominent. The growth factors encourage blood flow, improve scalp health, and awaken dormant hair follicles, paving the way for fuller, healthier hair over time.

Key benefits of PRF

BenefitsDetails

Enhanced Healing

The rich concentration of growth factors within PRF accelerates the body’s natural healing response. This not only speeds up tissue repair at the treated site but also reduces the risk of complications, promoting a smoother recovery process.

Tissue Regeneration and New Cell Growt

PRF’s platelets and fibrin matrix work together to stimulate the production of new cells and blood vessels, encouraging healthier, rejuvenated tissue in the treated area. This regeneration process can enhance skin quality, promote collagen production, and support lasting improvements.

Infection Prevention

PRF's healing properties also contribute to a lower risk of infection, as the growth factors and immune cells present in the fibrin matrix strengthen the body’s defenses in the treated area.

PRF Frequently asked questions

Still have questions? Contact our team who will be happy to answer any queries or concerns.

What is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)?

PRF is a natural healing solution made from a patient’s own blood, rich in platelets, fibrin, and growth factors, used to accelerate healing in dental and medical treatments.

How is PRF different from PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma)?

Unlike PRP, PRF contains a fibrin matrix that allows for a slower release of growth factors, promoting longer-lasting healing effects without the use of additives or anticoagulants.

What procedures can PRF be used for?

PRF is commonly used in dental implants, bone grafting, tooth extractions, and soft tissue healing. It is also used in facial rejuvenation and skin treatments.

Is PRF safe?

Yes, PRF is very safe as it is made from the patient’s own blood, reducing the risk of allergic reactions or infections.

How long does the PRF process take?

The PRF process typically takes about 15 minutes. A small blood sample is drawn, processed in a centrifuge, and then applied to the treatment area during the procedure.

How does PRF help with healing?

PRF releases growth factors that promote cell regeneration, reduce inflammation, and enhance tissue repair, leading to faster recovery and improved outcomes.

Are there any side effects of PRF treatment?

Since PRF is derived from your own blood, side effects are minimal. Some mild swelling or discomfort at the application site may occur, but it typically subsides quickly.

Is PRF painful?

PRF treatment is typically painless. Patients may experience minor discomfort from the blood draw, but the procedure itself is generally well-tolerated.

How soon can I see the results of PRF treatment?

You can expect to see results from your PRF treatment 2-3 months after treatment sessions are completed.

However, every treatment and patient is different, so the timeline for noticeable results may vary. It’s normal to see some hair loss before your hair regrows stronger and thicker. All of this and more will be discussed with Dr Sabika during your consultation

PRF Hair Loss Treatment Aftercare at Skin Medical

Following Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) treatment at Skin Medical, some swelling and bruising at the injection sites on the scalp is entirely normal and typically settles within a few days. Most patients can return to their normal routine shortly after their appointment. PRF works by stimulating the scalp’s natural healing response and awakening dormant hair follicles, so results develop gradually over time. Most patients begin to notice improvements in hair density and scalp health within two to three months of starting their course of treatment.

PRF Aftercare Summary

PRF is a next-generation, non-surgical hair restoration treatment that uses your body’s own growth factors to improve scalp health and stimulate hair growth naturally. A small amount of blood is drawn, processed in a centrifuge to extract the platelet-rich fibrin, and injected into areas of the scalp where hair loss or thinning is most prominent. Because PRF is processed without anticoagulants, it contains a higher concentration of growth factors than traditional PRP, making it a more potent and effective option for hair restoration. At Skin Medical, all PRF treatments are performed by Dr Sabika Karim, with a course of three to six sessions recommended for optimal results.

PRF Pre-Treatment Guidance

To prepare for your PRF appointment at Skin Medical:

  • Arrive with a clean scalp, free from styling products, dry shampoo or treatments
  • Eat a good meal and stay well hydrated before your appointment, as this supports the blood draw process and your overall comfort during treatment
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen where possible in the days before treatment, unless prescribed by your doctor
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment to minimise the risk of bruising
  • Inform Dr Karim of any medications, medical conditions or scalp concerns at your consultation
  • A consultation is compulsory before all PRF treatments at Skin Medical

During your appointment:

  • A small amount of blood will be drawn from your arm and processed in a centrifuge to prepare your PRF
  • The scalp will be cleansed before treatment
  • No anaesthetic is required for PRF treatment
  • Treatment time is typically 15 to 30 minutes

What to Expect Immediately After PRF

PRF is a well-tolerated treatment with minimal downtime for most patients.

You may experience:

  • Mild swelling or puffiness on the scalp at and around the injection sites
  • Light bruising, which may occasionally extend to the forehead or temples
  • Tenderness or sensitivity on the scalp for the first day or two
  • Temporary redness across the treated areas

These effects are entirely normal and a sign that the treatment has been administered correctly. They typically resolve within a few days as the scalp begins its healing and regeneration process.

PRF Post-Treatment Care

To support your scalp’s recovery and allow the growth factors to work as effectively as possible, we recommend the following after your treatment.

  • Avoid washing your hair for at least 24 hours following treatment to allow the PRF to remain in contact with the scalp and support absorption
  • When you do wash your hair, use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo and avoid vigorous scrubbing of the scalp
  • Avoid applying styling products, dry shampoo, hair dye or chemical treatments to the scalp for at least 48 hours post-treatment
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for 24 hours following your session
  • Avoid direct sun exposure on the scalp for 24 to 48 hours, and use a hat or SPF when outdoors during this period
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment to reduce bruising and support recovery
  • Stay well hydrated in the days following your session, as hydration supports the body’s healing and regeneration processes
  • Avoid massaging or applying pressure to the scalp for 24 hours after treatment

When Will I See Results from PRF?

PRF works by stimulating the scalp’s natural regenerative processes, so results develop gradually over the course of your treatment plan.

  • Improvements in scalp health and early signs of hair regrowth can be seen in as little as two to three months after beginning treatment
  • Hair density, thickness and overall scalp condition continue to improve progressively throughout the course of treatment
  • A course of three to six sessions is recommended for optimal results, with sessions spaced at regular intervals as advised by Dr Karim
  • Results build cumulatively with each session, so completing the full recommended course is important for achieving the best outcome

Your practitioner will monitor your progress throughout the course and advise on whether maintenance sessions are recommended following completion.

Who May Not Be Suitable for PRF?

Suitability for PRF should always be assessed during a full consultation. Treatment may not be appropriate if you have certain blood disorders or clotting conditions, are taking blood-thinning medications that cannot be paused, have active scalp infections or skin conditions in the treatment area, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

A thorough consultation with Dr Sabika Karim is compulsory before all PRF treatments at Skin Medical to confirm suitability and design a personalised treatment plan.

When to Contact Skin Medical

PRF is a safe and well-established treatment when performed by an experienced medical practitioner. However, please contact Skin Medical if you experience:

  • Significant or worsening swelling beyond 48 hours
  • Signs of infection such as increasing redness, heat or discharge on the scalp
  • Unusual or persistent pain following treatment
  • Any unexpected changes to the scalp or treated area

We are here to support you throughout your PRF journey and to answer any questions at every stage of your treatment and recovery.
