Sculptra at Skin Medical

Sculptra is designed to naturally restore facial volume and improve skin texture by stimulating the production of the skin’s own collagen.

At Skin Medical, under the expert guidance of Dr Sabika Karim, we offer Sculptra, which enhances the production of your own natural collagen to prevent ageing.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is an advanced dermal filler that has been developed to provide natural-looking results by enhancing production of the skin’s own natural collagen. This product is designed to address facial volume loss and signs of ageing and provide long-lasting rejuvenation.

The treatment is designed for individuals seeking a subtle and gradual improvement in their appearance. Unlike traditional fillers that offer instant results, Sculptra works progressively, with visible improvements appearing over several weeks. This approach is much more likely to produce natural-looking outcomes.

Sculptra Technology

Sculptra’s core technology is based on poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biodegradable synthetic substance that has been used in medical applications for decades, including in dissolvable stitches and soft tissue implants. PLLA works by gradually stimulating collagen production, which is essential for maintaining the skin’s elasticity and structure.

As we age, our skin loses collagen as its capacity to produce it naturally decreases. This leads to the more pronounced formation of wrinkles and sagging skin. Traditional fillers, injecting substances like Hyaluronic Acid, often provide immediate but short-term results by adding volume to plump up an area. In contrast, Sculptra’s unique mechanism of action gradually restores facial volume and improves skin texture over time, ensuring more natural results.

Sculptra Product Information

Sculptra is found as a fine powder, which is then reconstituted with sterile water by the healthcare provider before injection. This process allows the PLLA microparticles to be evenly distributed, which means a more consistent collagen stimulation throughout the treated area. The treatment is typically administered through a series of injections into the deep dermis or subcutaneous layer of the skin.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a dermal filler that stimulates collagen production, providing natural-looking restoration of facial volume and skin texture improvement.

How long do the results last?

The results of Sculptra can last up to two years, depending on the individual and lifestyle factors.

Is the treatment painful?

The injections may cause some discomfort, but a topical anaesthetic can be applied to reduce pain.

Typically, three treatment sessions are recommended, spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Initial improvements can be seen after a few weeks, with full results developing over the course of a few months.

Sculptra Aftercare at Skin Medical

Following Sculptra treatment at Skin Medical, some swelling, bruising and redness in the treated area is entirely normal and typically settles within a few days. Most patients can return to work immediately after their appointment. Unlike traditional fillers, Sculptra does not produce an immediate visible change in appearance. Instead, results develop gradually over several months as the treatment stimulates your body’s own collagen production, with visible improvements typically apparent at around three months. Results can last up to two years, with a series of three treatment sessions recommended for optimal correction.

Sculptra Aftercare Summary

Sculptra is an advanced collagen-stimulating injectable treatment made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable substance that has been used safely in medical applications for decades. By gradually stimulating collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, Sculptra restores facial volume, improves skin texture and addresses signs of ageing in a way that looks entirely natural and develops progressively over time. At Skin Medical, all Sculptra treatments are performed by Dr Sabika Karim, with a series of three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart typically recommended.

Sculptra Pre-Treatment Guidance

To prepare for your Sculptra appointment at Skin Medical:

  • Arrive with clean skin, free from make-up or skincare products in the treatment area
  • Eat before your appointment to ensure comfort during treatment
  • Avoid blood-thinning medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen where possible in the days before treatment, unless prescribed by your doctor
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment to minimise the risk of bruising and swelling
  • Stay well hydrated in the days leading up to your visit
  • Inform Dr Karim of any previous facial or injectable treatments, medical conditions or medications at your consultation
  • A consultation is compulsory before all Sculptra treatments at Skin Medical

During your appointment:

  • Clinical photographs and consent will be completed before treatment begins
  • The treatment area will be assessed, marked and cleansed
  • Local anaesthetic will be used to ensure comfort throughout the procedure
  • Treatment time is typically 30 to 60 minutes

What to Expect Immediately After Sculptra

Sculptra is a well-tolerated injectable procedure with a straightforward recovery for most patients.

You may experience:

  • Swelling, redness and mild bruising at and around the injection sites
  • Tenderness or sensitivity in the treated area for the first few days
  • Temporary firmness or small lumps beneath the skin as the product settles, which is a normal and expected part of early recovery

Because Sculptra works by stimulating your body’s own collagen production rather than adding immediate volume, the treated area will return to a more natural appearance once post-treatment swelling has resolved. Progressive improvements will then develop gradually over the following weeks and months as new collagen forms.

Sculptra Post-Treatment Care

To support your recovery and help achieve the best possible outcome from your Sculptra treatment, please follow these aftercare instructions carefully.

The 5-5-5 massage rule: Massage the treated areas for five minutes, five times a day, for five days following your appointment. This helps to distribute the product evenly beneath the skin and reduces the risk of small lumps forming at the injection sites. Dr Karim will demonstrate the correct technique before you leave the clinic.

Additional aftercare guidance:

  • Avoid touching or pressing the treated area beyond the recommended massage routine for the first 24 hours
  • Apply a cold compress gently if needed to help reduce swelling, but do not place it directly onto the skin
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment to reduce bruising and swelling
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms and hot baths for 24 to 48 hours
  • Avoid prolonged sun exposure and extreme cold on the treated areas for two weeks following treatment
  • Avoid dental procedures for two weeks after treatment
  • Stay well hydrated in the days and weeks following treatment, as hydration supports the collagen-stimulating process

When Will I See Results from Sculptra?

Sculptra works on a gradual timeline that is quite different from traditional injectable fillers.

  • The initial swelling following treatment will settle within a few days, after which the area will return to its pre-treatment appearance
  • Subtle improvements in skin quality and firmness may begin to be noticed in the weeks following treatment
  • Visible results typically become apparent at around three months as new collagen continues to form and mature
  • Results can last up to two years, with the improvement appearing entirely natural as it develops progressively over time

A series of three treatment sessions spaced approximately four to six weeks apart is recommended for optimal correction. Dr Karim will monitor your progress at each session and advise on your treatment plan accordingly.

Who May Not Be Suitable for Sculptra?

Suitability for Sculptra should always be assessed during a full consultation. Treatment may not be appropriate if you have active skin infections, open wounds or compromised skin in the treatment area, a known allergy to poly-L-lactic acid or any components of the product, a history of abnormal scarring, certain autoimmune or inflammatory skin conditions, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

A thorough consultation with Dr Sabika Karim is compulsory before all Sculptra treatments at Skin Medical to confirm suitability and design a personalised treatment plan.

When to Contact Skin Medical

Sculptra is a safe and well-established collagen-stimulating treatment when performed by an experienced medical professional. However, please contact Skin Medical promptly if you experience:

  • Persistent or worsening swelling beyond one week
  • Firm nodules or lumps beneath the skin that do not respond to massage
  • Signs of infection such as increasing redness, heat or discharge
  • Any unusual or unexpected changes in the treated area

We are here to support you throughout your Sculptra journey and to answer any questions as your results gradually develop over time.
