What are lip lines?

Lip lines, often referred to as lip wrinkles or smoker’s lines, are vertical lines that form on the lips and extend towards the nose, becoming deeper and more noticeable with age. These lines can be particularly frustrating as they are accentuated by lipstick. The primary causes of lip lines include decreased collagen and elastin production, leading to thinner, less elastic skin.

The delicate nature of the skin on the lips, combined with constant exposure to UV light, exacerbates dryness and line formation. Smoking significantly contributes to lip wrinkles through the generation of free radicals and repetitive pursing motions.

What treatments can be considered for lip lines?

Dr Sabika will advise you on the range of procedures that will give you the best results based on your individual concerns. There are a few types of treatment that can be particularly effective at treating lip line concerns including:

HA Fillers (hyaluronic acid) are injected into the lips and surrounding areas to fill in lines and create fuller lips with subtle, effective results. Chemical peels, particularly suited for the upper lip, remove the top layer of skin, allowing new, younger-looking skin to grow in its place.

Laser resurfacing removes the top layer of skin and tightens underlying tissues, providing long-lasting results, especially around the mouth, nose, and eyes. Microneedling, involving tiny needles, stimulates collagen production and reduces fine lines, also tightening the skin. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments, known as vampire facials, use plasma from the patient’s blood to stimulate collagen production when injected into the face.

Lastly, anti-wrinkle injections can relax the muscles around the mouth, softening the appearance of wrinkles. An experienced practitioner with a delicate touch is crucial for the best results.
