Aftercare for Minor Surgical Procedures

Welcome to your aftercare page

Thank you for trusting Skin Medical with your recent minor surgical treatment. We’re committed to supporting you through the healing process and ensuring the best possible results. Please take a moment to review the following aftercare guidelines to ensure a smooth and quick recovery.

The removal of a skin lesion requires a small incision, resulting in a wound that will heal, it is possible this will leave a faint scar. Your wound may be closed with stitches, skin glue, or left to heal naturally, depending on the type and location of the lesion.

If stitches have been used, you will be asked to make an appointment to have them removed at the appropriate time. In some cases, dissolvable stitches may be used, which do not require removal.

What to expect after your Minor Surgical Procedure:

  • Mild Swelling and Redness: It’s normal to experience some mild swelling and redness at the treated area, which should subside within a few hours to a couple of days.
  • Discomfort: Some mild discomfort may occur, but this is usually short-lived.
  • Bruising: Light bruising may be present, depending on the area treated. Bruising should fade within a few days to a week.
  • Healing Process: You may notice a feeling of tightness or mild sensitivity at the treated site, but this should gradually improve with time.

Keep the Treated Area Clean: Gently cleanse the area with lukewarm water and a mild, non-abrasive cleanser. Pat dry with a clean towel.
Avoid Touching the Area: Avoid touching or rubbing the treated area for at least 24–48 hours to prevent irritation or the introduction of bacteria.
Pain Management: Mild pain is normal once the anesthetic wears off. Over-the-counter pain relief (e.g., Paracetamol) can be used as needed. Avoid Aspirin or Ibuprofen as these can increase bruising.
Infection Monitoring: Signs of infection include increased pain, redness, swelling, or discharge. If you suspect an infection, contact your GP.
Bruising & Swelling: This is common and usually fades over two weeks. Rest, elevation, and cold compresses can help reduce swelling.
Scabbing or crusting may occur in some cases, and it is important not to pick or peel these as they protect the healing skin.
Apply a Soothing Cream: If advised by your practitioner, apply a soothing cream or ointment to the treated area to reduce redness or irritation.
Hydrate Your Skin: Apply a gentle moisturizer regularly to keep the area hydrated. Avoid harsh exfoliants for 7–10 days after treatment
Use Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen daily to protect the area from sun exposure and prevent pigmentation changes. Reapply as needed.
Avoid Heat and Sweat: Avoid exposure to saunas, hot tubs, or strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours after your procedure to minimize swelling and irritation.
Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks. Cover the wound or use sunscreen once healed.
Avoid Makeup: If possible, avoid applying makeup to the treated area for 24 hours after the procedure. If makeup must be used, ensure that your makeup tools are clean and use mineral makeup for a lighter touch.
Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting while stitches are in place and for two weeks after removal.
Washing & Bathing: You can shower after 24 hours but avoid soaking the wound until dressings are removed. Keep the wound dry and apply Vaseline twice daily to encourage healing.
Swimming: Refrain from swimming for at least two weeks after surgery.
Watch for Signs of Infection: If you notice increased rednesspainpus, or fever, please contact us immediately, as these could be signs of infection.
Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol for at least 24–48 hours post-procedure, as they can impede the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

Additional Considerations:

  • The healing process will vary depending on the procedure, but the results should gradually improve over the next few days.
  • If any unusual swellingpersistent discomfort, or other concerns arise, don’t hesitate to reach out for advice or support.

Types of Wound Closure:

  • Removable Stitches: Must be removed by a Practice Nurse within the advised timeframe (typically 5–14 days, depending on location).
  • Dissolvable Stitches: Gradually dissolve under the skin and do not require removal.
  • Skin Glue: Forms a protective scab that peels off within 5–10 days.

Healing times vary based on the area:

  • Face: 5-7 days
  • Scalp: 5-10 days
  • Arms: 7-14 days
  • Legs: 10-14 days
  • Trunk/Abdomen: 9-14 days

The exact timeframe for stitch removal will be discussed with you on the day of surgery.
